winter wonderland

it’s not christmas until you parade through stalls luring you in to win a giant minion toy whilst your nose is occupied with the smell of burnt candy floss and sweet mulled wine. my sister and i went on our first double date ever to winter wonderland in hyde park london and we had a blast.

loksze reached a milestone that day – his first ever churros. lathered in melted chocolate and dusted with icing sugar. it probably only took us 5 minutes to rinse the entire paper cone.

there were times when i wondered whether my sister wanted me to be at such a romantic place with her to take cute pictures of her and dan, or whether she actually wanted me there. just kidding. she always wants me there.

winter wonderland was the perfect place for me to practice shooting in low light conditions and experiment with different coloured lights. post processing these photos was also a challenge although it has let me go beyond my go-to natural, light tones when editing. teal, oranges and reds with grain was my running theme in this set of photos.

paying £5 for the simplest burger is also part of the whole winter wonderland experience. overpriced food is what winter wonderland really is.

hey-ho, and some £6 hotdogs to top the night. surely a sausage does not cost that much.

ok i’m out before i become a grinch.

my dear grandma’s birthday

i came back to london a few weeks ago to celebrate my grandmas birthday. it was a happy occasion filled with love, joy, and warmth from laughter and shared food.
being at uni has made me more intentional in spending time with my family and really appreciating these big get togethers whilst we still have an opportunity to.

my uncle recently got a new pup too – a cute 4 month old labrador called lily. we got to play with her and see some of the tricks she’s been trying to learn. my grandma also enjoyed using her limited english to tell lily to ‘wait a minute’ and ‘sit down’.

my grandparents enjoy cooking a lot, even their birthday meals. they enjoy the comfort of eating at home and spending a relaxed evening with all of us.

but this year, after cutting cake, we went to a friend’s restaurant for an incredibly tasty meal. we wanted our grandparents to truly take a break and to relax – and this was only possible if they were able to stay far away from the kitchen.

maybe it’s life at uni, maybe it’s just the way it was – but the food we were served was like heaven on a plate. we had plates of crab, fried prawns, various other bits of seafood, chicken and rice infused by the chicken.

we had such a fab time and every dish was ‘photoworthy’.

the meal was tied up with a platter of banana fritters and vanilla ice cream. perfect.

happy birthday dear grandma. wishing you good health and happiness everyday. we love you.

autumnal yellows

after shooting at our first location, etain and i made our way around bethnal green and to our surprise, found this beautiful street of monochramatic buildings with yellow leaves ruffled along one side.

we stopped for a quick outfit shoot, and i got a chance to test out my new 20mm lens i was using for the day.

these shots came as such a surprise. it is true that the best photos are taken when you least expect them! on lightroom, i intensified the yellows and played around with its hue for a subtle, yet dramatic effect. and quick tip, be careful about changing the yellow hues too much so as to affect the model’s skin tone!

i hope you enjoyed this quick shoot!

haynam x blossoms

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

it was 9:30pm and we were just chilling after dinner when i asked my sister, haynam, to do a photoshoot with me. i had ordered a home studio set off ebay for just a whopping £23 and borrowed some lightboxes off my friend – and i was dying to put it all to use. my sister has a crazy schedule packed with music rehearsals and performances, and i only had two days at home before i went back to uni.

so it was pretty much now or never…

i did my sister’s makeup for her, packed on a cheeky set of false eyelashes, and placed our kitchen stool onto the set for her to pose on. it was a rare occassion that our vase had flowers in it so i scooped them up as a prop for my sister to model with.

we were both relatively tired at this point, i had no idea what i was doing, my sister has no modelling experience whatsoever, and i felt as though my creative juices had kind of dried up. which leads me to being so surprised at how well these photos turned out!

this was my first attempt shooting on a studio set and i have yet to learn a lot about lighting and processing these images (thank you youtube), but i’d say it wasnt tooooo far off from what i had hoped for.

bethnal green

it was as if overnight etain and i saw the same vision – to solder our different creative components and translate them into reality. i love photography, and she loves fashion and styling. so after a 3 hour long facetime later (during which we should be working on our law degrees), we decided to book tickets back to london to settle our sudden explosion of creativity.

our series of photoshoots lined up for the day started off in bethnal green, at the conservatory archives (@conservatory_archives). it’s a small, tight space filled with wonderful shrubbery and just greenery. i would say that its more a display rather than a shop (yes you can buy their plants!)

the area was tight and we were limited to shooting around this space featuring an antique armchair. etain picked out a pair of striking red trousers featuring a checked pattern that she bought from forever 21 a while ago, which contrasted perfectly against the greenery.

we mainly utilised the natural light coming from one side of the window. however, upon accidentally switching on the flash on my camera, we realised that the results were even better as it produced a higher contrast and softened the highlights which were stripping away some of the details. all in all, this location was perfect for hitting off what we had envisioned.
